Members Newsletter 14
August 2006

The first purpose of this newsletter is to give advance notice of our forthcoming A.G.M.. Last year, we held our successful A.G.M. in September. Now, in order to avoid a clash with the Swallowcliffe bi-annual Harvest Supper, (see September Focus and notice boards, if you wish to book) we would like to propose

FRIDAY OCTOBER 20th 7.15pm
NOT October 21st as mentioned in a previous newsletter

It is felt that we could settle on this time of the year for our A.G.M. and make it an event in the regular Swallowcliffe calendar!
An agenda and financial statement will be issued nearer the time as a reminder. From the programme for this year's A.G.M., it is clear that there is plenty of activity within the Society. By announcing the date in good time we should be able to have it listed in the September issue of the W.L.H.F. Newsletter, as part of the calendar of Wiltshire group events.
When planning the A.G.M., another consideration is the South Wessex Community Flood project in which we hope to participate. To this end, our usual light supper will be preceeded by a guest-speaker giving a short introductory talk on the subject. This has been arranged with Nick Reid of the Environmental Agency and there will be an opportunity to talk to him during supper. Photographs from Swallowcliffe Archive of the effects of the "cloudburst" in May 1989 will form part of the display material on October 20th (and of course, the finished project.)
Then, from the point of view of Swallowcliffe, situated at one of the sources of the River Nadder, the society will be able to gather any relevant information and historical material, to make our contribution to this very interesting project which aims "to research the past to protect the future"; obviously, what happens at the sources of the river, eventually affects downstream. We hope that members will be able to participate in various ways to build up the material. The Flood project may form part of the larger A.O.N.B village history, already mentioned to members, as will other new lines of enquiry.
